LOWER BEAK
We examined beaks of E. atlantica from two individuals (101, 105 mm ML). The following characters are taken from Clarke (1986). Arithmetic means from the two squid are used for characters requiring measurements.
- Pigmentation - Normal.
- Pigmentation pattern - See photographs.
- (Wing length)/(visible rostral edge) (profile) - 1.7
- Height/baseline (profile) - 1.13
- (Length from rostral tip to wing tip projected on baseline)/baseline (profile) - 0.21
- (Hood length)/(crest length) (profile) - 0.62
- (Crest length)/baseline (profile) - 0.65
- (Rostral base)/(visible rostral edge) (profile) - 0.98
- (Hood length)/(visible rostral edge) (profile) - 0.82
- Rostral width ratio [LRL/(length between jaw angles)] - 2.78
- Visible rostral angle (profile) - Obtuse
- - 30. As in E. famelica

Comments
E. atlantica lower beaks are very similar to those of E. famelica and the few beaks we have examined are insufficient to determine if they can be separated. To distinguish E. atlantica (and E. famelica) from other slender-beaked mastigoteuthids (ie, Mastigopsis. hjorti and Mastigotragus pyrodes) the page on E. famelica beaks.
