Pipunculidae of uncertain placement

Jeff Skevington
Containing group: Pipunculidae

Introduction

The 17 species listed above are of uncertain placement. The types need to be examined to determine the generic position of these species since the published descriptions are inadequate. The generic names indicated for these taxa are the names under which they were described. In many cases (Dorylas and Dorilas), these names are now invalid under a ruling by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, 1963). For those interested in the history of this ruling, see the following: Aczél (1951), Hardy (1951a, b), Oldroyd (1951), Rapp (1951), Smart (1951) and Stone (1951). Cameron (1974) provides some insights into etymology of the names Dorilas and Pipunculus.

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
