This Mesozoic family consists of medium-sized to large aquatic beetles with divided compound eyes. Larvae have raptorial front legs. The subfamily Necronectinae is found in the Middle to Late Jurassic of Asia and Europe, and Early Cretaceous of northern Africa, Coptoclavinae in the Early Cretaceous of Asia, and Charonoscaphinae in the Late Jurassic of Asia. See Ponomarenko (1977, 1992) for further details.
